Text Verse: Gen 11:4 "And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth." Introduction: Since the beginning there has always been those that have wanted to place themselves on the same level with God, or above God. We can see this in 1. Satan Isa 14:10-15 "All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us? {11} Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee. {12} How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! {13} For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: {14} I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. {15} Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit." Ezek 28:11-19 "Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, {12} Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. {13} Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. {14} Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. {15} Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. {16} By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. {17} Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee. {18} Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffic; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee. {19} All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more." 2. Eve in the Garden Gen 3:1-6 "Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? {2} And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: {3} But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. {4} And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: {5} For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. {6} And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat." And in our text this morning we can find the same thing taking place. A group of people that had grow complacent and bored sought for something to do. By the way, that it way it is important to stay busy for the Lord, because boredom leads to dissatisfaction, and dissatisfaction leads distress, difficulty, and discomfort. Notice: 1. Picture From the Past (Gen 11:1-9) A. Plan of the People. Gen 11:3 "And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick[2] for stone, and slime had they for mortar. 1. The brick in and of themselves were not bad, it was what they were going to do with the brick. B. Product of the People Gen 11:3 "And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar."
Note: Mortar is what we know today for attaching bricks or putting blocks together. However there is a item known as tri-calcium silicate if it is not placed in the mortar, the mortar will not be water proof and will eventually leak, and dissolve. This mortar without this material is known as slime. C. The Pride of the People Gen 11:4 "And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth."
Prov 16:18 "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall." Prov 6:16-17 "These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: {17} A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood," D. The Persistence of the People Gen 11:6 "And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do." Gen 11:8 "So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city." This leads us to our second point. 2. Picture of the Present America is falling into the same mold. However since we can't get to God's level, we are trying to bring God down to our level. Isa 29:13 "Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:" Rom 1:20-32 "For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: {21} Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. {22} Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, {23} And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. {24} Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: {25} Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. {26} For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: {27} And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet. {28} And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; {29} Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, {30} Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, {31} Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: {32} Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them." We can see this in: a. Take prayer out of school. (Trying to do away with God) Prov 21:1-4 "The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will. {2} Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts. {3} To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice. {4} An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin." (John 3:30 KJV) "He must increase, but I must decrease."
4. The Persistence of the People. 5. The Punishment of the People. (Prov 1:24-31 KJV) "Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; {25} But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: {26} I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; {27} When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. {28} Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: {29} For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: {30} They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. {31} Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices." (Jer 23:19 KJV) "Behold, a whirlwind of the LORD is gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked." The very thing that the World is trying to avoid is coming to pass. Not only can we see the world trying to bring God to there level, we can also see this in: Close: God help us to put God in His right place, as well as ourselves. Let's not makes us a name but rather make His Name known. |
