Text:
Matt. 1:1, 2
Gen. 25:21-34
Introduction:
Notice: Each name
listed is the ancestors of Jesus. And each name listed is the first born
son with the exception of one. That one individual can be found in Gen.
25.
1. Esau The
First Born Son of Isaac
A. Was a cunning
hunter, and a man of the field. (vs. 27)
B. Was a profane
person.
(Heb 12:16 KJV)
"Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau,
who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright."
1. Does not mean he
used profanity but rather lived for worldly things.
C. Sold his
birthright.
1. Being the oldest
son he was entitled by law and custom to receive twice as much as a
younger son's portion.
2. Was also some day
to be regarded as the head of the family.
3. Came home from
hunting one day with no food, and was very hungry, and sold his
birthright to his brother, for a meal.
4. He repented for
his choice, not to God but to Isaac.
a. Esau never
mentions God in the whole book of Genesis.
b. Esau only
repented of his bargain, not his sin.
c. Esau sought
restitution, not pardon.
d. Even with tears
Esau found no mercy.
2. Results of
Esau Choice.
A. He had a
temporary need temporarily met.
B. He lost the
privileges of being the first born son.
C. He lost his
fathers blessing.
1. All the crying in
the world couldn't change his problem. (Gen.27:34-40)
D. Was not
included in the ancestry of Christ.
3. Lesson We Can
Learn From Esau.
A. There is
always someone who wants to take our birthright, or us to sell out.
B. We need to
see what we lose when we make choices.
C. To live for
yourself, with only today in view, will always be costly.
D. We need to go
to the right place to have our needs met instead of the wrong crowd.
E. Small
compromises often lead to bigger sacrifices.
F. We can
however learn from our mistakes and make better choices next time.
(Gen 36:4 KJV) "And
Adah bare to Esau Eliphaz; and Bashemath bare Reuel;"
1. Eliphaz means
strength of God.
2. Reuel means joy of
God.
