Text Verses: (Exo 8:25 KJV) And Pharaoh called for Moses and for Aaron, and said, Go ye, sacrifice to your God in the land. (Exo 8:28 KJV) And Pharaoh said, I will let you go, that ye may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness; only ye shall not go very far away: entreat for me. (Exo 10:8-10 KJV) And Moses and Aaron were brought again unto Pharaoh: and he said unto them, Go, serve the LORD your God: but who are they that shall go? {9} And Moses said, We will go with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds will we go; for we must hold a feast unto the LORD. {10} And he said unto them, Let the LORD be so with you, as I will let you go, and your little ones: look to it; for evil is before you. (Exo 10:24-27 KJV) And Pharaoh called unto Moses, and said, Go ye, serve the LORD; only let your flocks and your herds be stayed: let your little ones also go with you. {25} And Moses said, Thou must give us also sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice unto the LORD our God. {26} Our cattle also shall go with us; there shall not an hoof be left behind; for thereof must we take to serve the LORD our God; and we know not with what we must serve the LORD, until we come thither. {27} But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he would not let them go. Introduction: After much aggravation and continued discomfort, the plagues finally get to Pharaoh. Those plagues included Egypt's water turns into blood (7:19-25). Frogs appear everywhere (8:1-14). Lice appear (8:16-19). And then the flies appear every where except in Goshen (8:22-24). 22 And I will sever in that day the land of Goshen, in which my people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there; to the end thou mayest know that I am the LORD in the midst of the earth. 23 And I will put a division between my people and thy people: to morrow shall this sign be. 24 And the LORD did so; and there came a grievous swarm of flies into the house of Pharaoh, and into his servants' houses, and into all the land of Egypt: the land was corrupted by reason of the swarm of flies.
Now that brings us to our text. Pharaoh offers four compromises to the nation of Israel. Often the same is true in our lives today. We know what we need to do, and the stands that we need to take, but the world offers us a compromise, just like Pharaoh did.
Notice: 1. Compromise Number 1 "Go but Don't Go" (8:25) (Exo 8:25 KJV) And Pharaoh called for Moses and for Aaron, and said, Go ye, sacrifice to your God in the land.
A. Go ye, sacrifice to your God in the land.
1. Pharaoh will allow the people to go and worship God.
2. He insists, however, that they do so in Egypt.
B. Satan offers the same compromise today.
C. Believers are called to a different life.
1. Jesus was not of this world
(John 15:18-20)
John 15:18-20 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. {19} If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. {20} Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
(John 17:14-17 KJV) I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. {15} I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. {16} They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. {17} Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
3. Deliverance from this evil world (Gal 1:4)
(Gal 1:4 KJV) Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:
D. Moses rejected this compromise. (8:26,27)
26 And Moses said, It is not meet so to do; for we shall sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to the LORD our God: lo, shall we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, and will they not stone us? 27 We will go three days' journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to the LORD our God, as he shall command us. 2. Compromise Number 2 "Go, But Don't Go Very Far" (8:28) (Exo 8:28 KJV) And Pharaoh said, I will let you go, that ye may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness; only ye shall not go very far away: entreat for me.
A. I will let you go.
1. Not quite the real thing.
2. "only ye shall not go very far away"
B. Pharaoh lengthens the chain.
C. You've heard it said before.
1. "Don't go off the deep end"
2. "Don't carry religion too far"
D. God call for complete commitment.
(Rom 12:1-2)
(Rom 12:1-2 KJV) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. {2} And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. 3. Compromise Number 3 "Go But Leave Your Family Here" (10:8-10) (Exo 10:8-10 KJV) And Moses and Aaron were brought again unto Pharaoh: and he said unto them, Go, serve the LORD your God: but who are they that shall go? {9} And Moses said, We will go with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds will we go; for we must hold a feast unto the LORD. {10} And he said unto them, Let the LORD be so with you, as I will let you go, and your little ones: look to it; for evil is before you.
A. More plagues must come before Pharaoh offers again.
1. Murrain on the cattle (9:1-7)
2. Boils on the Egyptians (9:8-12)
3. Hail except in Goshen (9:22-26)
B. The threat of the plague of locusts (10:4-6)
C. This compromise is unacceptable.
1. Satan wants our families.
2. Our families ought to serve God with us.
(Josh 24:15)
(Josh 24:15 KJV) And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. 4. Compromise Number 4 "Go but leave your Possessions" (10:24-27) (Exo 10:24-27 KJV) And Pharaoh called unto Moses, and said, Go ye, serve the LORD; only let your flocks and your herds be stayed: let your little ones also go with you.
A. Still more plagues are needed to move Pharaoh's heart.
1. Locusts (10:12-20)
2. Darkness except in Goshen (10:21-23)
B. Go ye, serve the LORD
1. "Let your flocks and your herds be stayed"
2. "Let your little ones also go with you."
C. We've all been offered this compromise.
D. Satan doesn't want God to have our possessions.
E. Moses reaction to this compromise. (10:26)
26 Our cattle also shall go with us; there shall not an hoof be left behind; for thereof must we take to serve the LORD our God; and we know not with what we must serve the LORD, until we come thither. Close:
1. Compromise keeps us in bondage.
2. Consecration allows no compromises.
3. Allow Christ to be Lord of all in your life. |
