Text Verse: Gen 24:4

(Genesis 24:4) "But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac."

Introduction:

This chapter is a summary of salvation and the history of the Church. Notice as we consider this story:

1. Abraham (The Fathers Purpose)

(Genesis 24:4) "But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac."

A. The thought of a bride originated with the Father.

B. It was the outcome of his love for his son.

C. This is clearly similar to Christ and the Church.

(Ephesians 5:32) "This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church."

2. Isaac (The Son and Heir)

(Genesis 24:36) "And Sarah my master's wife bare a son to my master when she was old: and unto him hath he given all that he hath."

A. Isaac was given an inheritance of all things.

B. Christ has been given all things.

(John 3:35) "The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand."

3. Eliezer (The Spirit's Mission)

This steward or servant of the house of Abraham is a perfect type of the Holy Spirit.

A. He had authority in the house.

(Genesis 24:2) "And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh:"

B. He was sent by the Father

(John 14:26) "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."

C. He was sent in the name of the Son

(John 14:26) "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."

D. He did not speak of himself.

(Genesis 24:33) "And there was set meat before him to eat: but he said, I will not eat, until I have told mine errand. And he said, Speak on."

1. The Holy Spirit doesn't speak of Himself, but of God.

(John 16:13) "Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come."

E. He revealed the things of Isaac

(Genesis 24:53) "And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things."

(John 16:14) "He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you."

F. He witnesses for his master.

(Genesis 24:35) "And the LORD hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and he hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses."

G. He guides all the way home

(Genesis 24:61) "And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way."

1. The Holy Spirit can guide us all the way home as well.

(John 14:16) "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;"

Every act of this servant seems instinct with deep spiritual teaching. He would not eat bread until he had made known his errand (v 33). The Holy Spirit cannot have fellowship with us until He has revealed to us the character of the Father and of the Son.

If the presence of Jesus Christ is to be enjoyed we must be obedient to this Holy Messenger.

4. Rebekah (The Bide of Christ)

(Genesis 24:58) "And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go."

This call

A. Is gracious.

B. It is personal (wilt thou)

C. It is urgent (hinder me not)

D. It implies separation (go)

Count the cost. Are you prepared to leave all and follow Him.

(Luke 14:26-27) "If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. {27} And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple."

(Luke 14:33) "So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple."

5. Following (The present life)

A. She pressed on to the prize.

B. She didn't take any detours

6. Canaan (The future home)

(Genesis 24:67) "And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death."

A. All the troubles of the weary journey are now forgotten.

1. One sight of our the Lord will heal all the wounds and scars received on the journey home.

B. She now rest in his love and became a joint heir with Isaac.
