Text Verse: Matthew 25:6

(Matthew 25:6) "And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him."

Introduction:

The emphasis in this story is on life rather than on labor. The idea here is not the sense of comparison in the phrase, "Then the kingdom of heaven." It has the meaning that it shall become like, suggesting that when the hour of Christ’s return nears, "a development shall take place resembling the story of the ten virgins.

I believe that there are things that Christians as well as non believers can learn from this story.

Notice with me:

1. The People (vss. 1-4)

(Matthew 25:1-4) "Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. {2} And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. {3} They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: {4} But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps."

A. The Bridegroom (The Lord)

(Matthew 25:11) "Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us."

B. The ten virgins.

1. Five foolish.

2. Five wise.

2. The Personalities

A. Notable character.

1. Were virgins.

2. Were moral people

3. Had a good reputation.

B. Noble intention

1. To see the bridegroom.

3. The Problem

A. Neglect of the foolish five

1. Failed to take oil with them

(Matthew 25:3) "They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:"

a. Oil in scripture has always represented the Holy Spirit.

It is a foolish thing not to trust Christ as your personal Saviour when the opportunity is given.

2. There hope was only in the lamp.

a. A picture of works salvation.

(Ephesians 2:8-9) "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: {9} Not of works, lest any man should boast."

B. Noticeable indifference. (vss 5)

(Matthew 25:5) "While the bridegroom tarried, they (all) slumbered and slept."

1. The foolish was indifferent to the fact of their need to obtain the oil needed in order to see the Bridegroom.

2. The wise were indifferent to notice and make know the need to the foolish.

(Romans 13:11) "And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed."

3. I believe that this is an accurate picture of the church today:

"Saved but Slumbering and Sleeping"

C. Nervous request (vss 8)

(Matthew 25:8) "And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out."

1. We can not give the source of light it only comes from the Lord, all we can do is point people that direction.

(John 14:6) "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

D. Nobel endeavor (vss 10)

(Matthew 25:10) "And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut."

1. Some will wait too long to get saved.

(Job 22:21) "Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee."

(Isaiah 55:6) "Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:"

2. Others will wait too long to point men to the Saviour.

E. Negative outcome (vss 11)

(Matthew 25:11-12) "Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. {12} But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not."

4. The Purpose

A. Foolish

1. Make them aware that now is the time to prepare to meet God.

(Amos 4:12) "Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: and because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Israel."

(2 Corinthians 6:2) "(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)"

B. Wise

1. To be faithful in doing what the Lord has commanded us to do.

(Matthew 24:46) "Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing."
