Text Verse Mark 10:21
(Mark 10:21) "Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me."
Introduction:
Life is full of decisions. Each day we decide what we will eat, what we will wear, where we will go and how we will spend our time.
Life is full of many small decisions and a few big ones, including who to marry, and what career to follow.
The biggest decision, of course, is what to do about Jesus. Each person must decide to accept Christ as Savior. If he doesn't decide to accept Christ, he has rejected Him, and will face Hell fire.
See John 3:16-18, 36 and 1 John 5:11-12. (1 John 5:11-12) "And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. {12} He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life."
A man we call "The rich young ruler" once came to Christ, wanting to know what he had to do to inherit eternal life. Jesus gave the man an answer. It was time for him to make a decision concerning Christ. (Mark 10:17) "And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?"
A. He came running
1. The man had no assurance of eternal life.
2. He was convicted that he needed help.
2. He Claimed To Keep Strict Commandments. (Vss. 18-20)
(Mark 10:18-20) "And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. {19} Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. {20} And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth."
A. Nobody has ever kept the Ten Commandments perfectly.
B. He was claiming to have kept some of them. Yet he knew he still lacked something.
3. He Had To Make A Specific Choice. (Vss. 21-22)
(Mark 10:21-22) "Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. {22} And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions."
1. He loves all sinners.
B. This man had an idol in his life.
1. Jesus knew that the idol was his riches.
C. The man could not turn to Christ unless he turned away from his idol of money.
D. He had to make a choice!
1. Not everyone who comes to Christ has to give up his money.
2. In this case the money was the thing holding him back.
E. He chose to keep the money and not choose Christ!
F. Every person has to make a decision to believe on Christ in order to have eternal life!
4. He Became The Subject Of A Sad Commentary. (Vss. 23-27)
(Mark 10:23-27) "And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! {24} And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! {25} It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. {26} And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved? {27} And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible."
A. It is very difficult for rich people to be saved. However, because of the work of God, it is not impossible.
