Text Verse: 2 Tim 2:21

(2 Tim 2:21 KJV) "If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work."

Introduction:

The Christian is to be different from those in the lost world around him. This difference is caused by the things in the Christian's life that are not in the lives of the lost and vise versa. Many call this difference personal separation. The text speaks of this difference with the word "purge" which literally means to cleanse out thoroughly, to remove from (as in 1 Cor. 5:7, of leaven).

Notice with me (5) concepts of this separation in our text.

1. The Purging Of Separation (vs 21)

(2 Tim 2:21 KJV) "If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work."

A. Separate from error (vss 15-18)

(2 Tim 2:15-18 KJV) "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. {16} But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. {17} And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; {18} Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some."

B. Separate from iniquity (vs 19)

(2 Tim 2:19 KJV) "Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity."

C. Separate from lust (vs 22)

(2 Tim 2:22 KJV) "Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart."

D. Separate from ignorance (vs 23)

(2 Tim 2:23 KJV) "But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes."

2. The Praise of Separation (vs 21)

(2 Tim 2:21 KJV) "If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work."

A. God honors those who separate themselves unto Him.

1. Example (Daniel)

(Dan 1:8 KJV) "But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself."

3. The Placement Of Separation (vs 21) "sanctified"

(2 Tim 2:21 KJV) "If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work."

The word means to be set apart for a special or particular purpose. By personal separation, Christians are set apart by God for service and blessing. (2 Cor. 6:17-18)

(2 Cor 6:17-18 KJV) "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, {18} And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty."

4. The Purpose of Separation (vs. 21)

(2 Tim 2:21 KJV) "If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work."

By personal separation a Christian makes himself qualified for service to the Lord (Isa. 52:11)

(Isa 52:11 KJV) "Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the LORD."

5. The Product of Separation (vs 21)

(2 Tim 2:21 KJV) "If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work."

The result of personal separation is service that is evaluation as good in the eyes of Lord and of man (Matt 5:16)

(Mat 5:16 KJV) "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

Close:

God's people are to be different, superior and contrast to the lost world. This difference is personal separation from error, evil, appetites of the flesh and ignorance. This separation is beneficial and causes service to be effective and powerful. Christian, are you separated unto the Lord?
