Text: Matt. 7:24-29 Luke 6:46-49

Introduction:

There are three swords here that characterise a wise man in the eyes of God. "Whosoever cometh to Me, and heareth My sayings, and doeth them" (vs. 47). To come to Him as Saviour, to hear Him as a Teacher, and to obey Him as a Master is an evidence that we have been and are being taught of God and made in Christ. These two builders are representatives of two classes or conditions of men: those who live by faith on the Son of God, and those who walk in the light of the sparks of their own kindling.

1. Jesus wants our works not our words.

Someone has said, "Actions speak louder than words."

A. There is a difference in hearing and doing.

B. There is a difference in knowing and doing.

James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

James 1:23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

James 1:24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

C. What Jesus wants is for us to do the things in which you have heard and learned.

Phil 4:9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

2. The Wisdom Of The Obedient.

Our Lord says, "He is like a (wise) man which built an house, and digged deep and laid the foundation on a rock" (vs 48). He is like such a man because:

A. He believed in the Rock

1. Jesus Christ is the Rock.

2. Jesus tells us we can do nothing without Him.

John 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

B. He spared no trouble to get at the Rock.

1. He dug deep.

a. Those who are successful spiritually have a deep foundation.

b. In building our life on the Foundation we must remove some things out of the way.

C. He built his house upon it after he found the rock.

1. He was not just interested in finding a good foundation, but rather sought the rock.

2. There is a difference in finding the rock and building on the rock.

3. We are to build and add to our faith.

2 Pet 1:5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

2 Pet 1:6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;

2 Pet 1:7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

2 Pet 1:8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Pet 1:9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

D. He wasn't disappointed with the results.

1. The floods came, and could not shake the house.

2. Christianity is no failure.

3. A life built on Christ will be found stable.

2 Tim 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

3. The Foolishness Of Disobedient.

"He that heareth and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth" (vs 49). The foolishness in this man is seen in that:

A. He disregarded the Rock.

1. He no doubt knew about the Rock, but thought he could get along as well without it.

Isa 5:21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

2. If we wish to end with Christ, we must begin with him.

B. He commenced to building too soon.

1. He began building when he should have been digging.

C. He built without a foundation.

1 Cor 3:11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Isa 28:16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.

D. His hope were suddenly cut off (vs 49)

1. He did not perish because he was lazy or indifferent to his need of a shelter.

2. He did his very best, but it was his best without the one thing needful.

a. Works may be many and beautiful but if Jesus is not the foundation of all, "one thing thou lackest," and lack of this one thing renders uselessness and fruitless every other thing.

3. Great was his loss.

4. It is too late to build another house when the flood was come.

Mal 4:1 For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

2 Th 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

Close:

My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness;I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus Name;On Christ the solid Rock I stand, All other ground is sinking sand; All other ground is sinking sand.

What are you standing on?
